It was milled for six hours. Although neither where clumping to badly the sides of the drum with the nickels where cleaner than the lead ball media drum.

Correct, hardened lead will work fine. If you want to learn more about milling BP, do a search for "Lloyd Sponenburg". He was the one who popularized ball mills back in '95 or so, and he was quite active on usenet at the time. Maybe his book is still available?

I've seen on skylighter that 1/2" brass ball bearings work as a sparkfree alternative to lead milling media. However, on the other hand, I cannot seem to find brass ball bearings without some percentage of iron included within (<%).

I bought some 'hardened lead' milling balls from skylighter. I milled some fine charcoal and threw it away (as mentioned earlier to clear any wax or oils off the balls). Then I milled a measured amount of KNO3 . When the balls went IN they were shiney (almost like chrome)..when they came OUT they were dull (just like lead sinkers). Normal or not ?
