As far as placement of your mill, the ideal distance is probably around 150ft or more away from any buildings of any sort. If you can barricade it that's even better (things like sandbags). Just make sure you don't block off air to the motor. When making black powder there is always a chance for it to go off.

The one and only time I tried to Mill pure kno3 I got the rock hard balls. I put them in a mason jar in case I ever get desperate enough to break them up and use them LOL I had just made a batch of black powder with the same kno3 but I guess the charcoal absorb the extra moisture.
Where I live, you can't really buy black powder. I have heard the black powder created by ball milling is superior to that made with red gum. I am planning to buy a 6 lb rock tumbler from HF and modify it a little. I live in a neighborhood, so I don't have that much room to distance the mill from buildings, and want to be safe.

Another similar mill is the Rebel 17, which is supposed to be a heavy duty version of the Model B. It has stronger rollers, powder coated jar, and stronger bearings. They're usually around 30 more expensive than a stock model B. The black jar wouldn't hurt to hide charcoal stains either.

The 3 chemicals are loaded into the ball mill, along with the lead balls, sealed shut and allowed to rotate for anywhere between 1 and 24 hours. As the ball mill rotates, the lead balls will crush the chemicals together, forcing some of the potassium nitrate into the pores of the charcoal and sulfur.
Having done black powder in a homemade cylindrical ball mill made of pvc pipe, and milling for hours at a time. I've had no issues using ceramic media. If you have it running the right speed, it will grind. It shouldn't be running so fast as to run up the side of the wall and drop from a height. Fluidized bed effect is what you're shooting for.
